About mama's home

Mama's Journey

At Mama’s Home, every dish is created with intention—and every flavor tells a story.

Rooted in my Virginia upbringing, Carolina connections, and Louisiana influences, my cooking has always been a blend of Southern comfort, Creole soul, and Cajun-inspired flavor. But my story doesn’t stop there.

As a proud military brat, I was blessed with the experience of living in and being influenced by different parts of the country—including Philadelphia, PA and Southern California. Those experiences expanded my palate and deepened my appreciation for diverse flavors, especially my exposure to Mexican cuisine, with its bold spices, slow-cooked meats, fresh herbs, and vibrant, layered flavor profiles that continue to inspire dishes in my kitchen today.

As I’ve grown deeper into my journey, I’ve come to understand that my food is part of something even bigger—a heritage that traces back to West and Central Africa, through the Caribbean, into the Carolinas, and down into Louisiana.

My roots also trace back to regions such as Senegambia (Senegal and The Gambia), Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, and Angola—places where rice, beans, and deeply seasoned stews were not just food, but culture, survival, and tradition. Those same ingredients and techniques live on in the dishes we still cook today, often without even realizing their origin.

There is also part of my lineage that connects to Native tribes of the Southeast and Louisiana regions—such as the Chowanoke Tribe and Nansemond Tribe of northeastern North Carolina, as well as tribes like the Choctaw Tribe and Caddo Nation—whose influence shows up in the use of corn, beans, and simple, earth-rooted cooking methods that have stood the test of time.

Somewhere along that journey, my lineage may have also passed through the Caribbean—bringing forward the bold flavors of citrus, spice, and heat that still show up in my kitchen today.

That journey—Africa → Caribbean → Carolinas → Louisiana → across the United States—is the foundation of Mama’s Home.

Today, Mama’s Home is evolving into a culinary experience that honors that full story.

My menus are thoughtfully inspired by the flavors and traditions passed down through generations—whether spoken, remembered, or rediscovered. From the bold, earthy roots of African cooking—like rice-based dishes, slow-simmered stews, and seasoned beans… to the vibrant, spiced influence of the Caribbean with citrus, allspice, and heat… to the deep comfort of Southern and Low Country cooking… to the rich, layered flavors of Louisiana Creole and Cajun cuisine… and even the influence of Mexican cooking with its balance of spice, depth, and freshness—every plate reflects a piece of that journey.

You may taste that story in dishes like:

  • Jerk-spiced shrimp over creamy Southern grits
  • Cajun Alfredo pasta
  • Seafood boils that have bold, flavor-packed mix of shrimp, crab, sausage, corn, and potatoes, all cooked together in seasoned spices and served family-style for a hands-on, communal experience.
  • Slow-simmered stews and seasoned rice bowls inspired by West African cooking
  • Mexican-inspired dishes featuring bold spices, fresh herbs, and layered flavor
  • And signature favorites like shrimp & grits, salmon patties, cheddar biscuits, and banana pudding cheesecake—reimagined with depth, soul, and intention

At its core, this is heritage cooking—elevated, blended, and brought home.

The inspiration for Mama’s Home came directly from my children, who encouraged me to share my home-cooked meals beyond our family table. Their belief in me pushed me to step out on faith and turn my passion into purpose. I also draw deeply from generations of women in my family—my mother, grandmother, and aunts—women who cooked with healing hands, prayed over their pots, and understood that food was more than nourishment; it was comfort, care, and connection.

Mama’s Home was created to honor that legacy—while also reclaiming and celebrating the deeper roots of where we come from.

Today, Mama’s Home specializes in in-home personal chef services and private dining experiences throughout the Charlotte area. I prepare fresh, soulful meals right in my clients’ kitchens, allowing them to enjoy the comfort of home-cooked food without the stress of planning, shopping, or cooking. Each menu is curated from my signature dishes while also offering heritage-inspired options that tell a richer story through flavor.

Because I believe there is a real need to bring love back into our homes—and food is one of the most powerful ways to do that.

A warm meal can calm a long day, bring families back together, spark conversation, and remind people they are cared for. Mama’s Home is my way of giving back—by creating flavorful, soulful experiences that turn into lasting memories. Every plate is an invitation to pause, gather, and feel at home.

What began as Sunday dinners in my Charlotte kitchen has grown into something much bigger. While my focus today is personal chef and private dining services, the long-term vision for Mama’s Home includes expanded offerings and continued community impact through Mama’s Home Cares—an initiative dedicated to feeding and uplifting those in need, because no one should ever feel forgotten.

Whether you’re enjoying a weekly meal prepared in your home or celebrating a special occasion, every bite carries the same message:

You are welcome here.

Mama’s Home isn’t just about food—it’s about love, legacy, and connection…a journey across continents, cultures, and generations—served one plate at a time.

And I would be honored to serve you. 💜
